In Year 3, children learn that we need light to see. They also learn that darkness means there is no light. They explore how light reflects from different surfaces. Pupils investigate how shadows form when an object blocks light. They watch how shadow size and shape change as the light source moves. Children also discuss safe ways to protect their eyes from strong light, including sunlight.
These activities support and follow the Year 3 National Curriculum for science, encouraging children to build essential enquiry skills such as observing patterns, identifying effects, investigating shadows and recording findings based on the topic focus.
