Year 6 evolution and inheritance teaches pupils how living things change over long periods of time. Children study fossil evidence and learn what it shows about ancient life. They investigate how offspring inherit traits from their parents but also show natural variation. Pupils explore how animals and plants adapt to suit their environment. They also learn how helpful adaptations can lead to evolutionary change over many generations. This approach builds a strong understanding of Year 6 evolution and inheritance and how living things survive and change.
These activities support and follow the Year 6 National Curriculum for science, encouraging children to build essential enquiry skills such as analysing evidence, comparing characteristics and explaining adaptations based on the topic focus.
