Teaching 3D shapes in the Early Years focuses on helping children explore, recognise and talk about solid shapes through real-life and practical experiences. These 3D shapes Early Years activities support EYFS mathematics within Shape, Space and Measure, encouraging pupils to handle objects, describe their properties and make simple comparisons. Children learn to identify common 3D shapes such as cubes, spheres and cylinders by discussing faces, edges and everyday uses. The 3D shapes Early Years activities are well suited to both continuous provision and adult-led sessions, supporting the development of mathematical language, observation skills and early spatial awareness linked to the Early Learning Goals.
