Developing an understanding of capacity in EYFS helps children compare, describe and explore how much different containers can hold through practical, play-based experiences. These capacity EYFS activities support pupils as they pour, fill and empty containers using water, sand and everyday classroom materials, encouraging meaningful mathematical talk. Learning focuses on using language such as full, empty, half-full and more or less, while building early problem-solving skills. Through repeated capacity EYFS activities, children gain confidence with capacity as part of Shape, Space and Measure within the Early Years Framework.
