Ivy and Bearlock Holmes KS1 Story Resource Pack
Bring the mystery and excitement of Ivy and Bearlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Dinosaur Fossil to life with this engaging collection of KS1 activities, created by Teacher’s Pet in collaboration with Reading Rocks and Picture News as part of the Ready, Set, Read project – designed to encourage reading for pleasure as part of the Go All In / National Literacy Trust initiative.
Inspired by Ivy and Bearlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Dinosaur Fossil by Kristyna Litten, published by Magic Cat Publishing, this resource pack encourages children to become detectives, palaeontologists and curious investigators as they explore the story beyond the book.
Packed with opportunities for observation, deduction and discovery, the resources build on the book’s dinosaur fossil mystery while encouraging children to ask questions, examine evidence and communicate their ideas.
The pack includes:
- a KS1 cross-curricular ideas map, filled with practical ways to extend the book across different areas of the curriculum;
- a fossil discovery tuff tray activity, where children carefully uncover hidden dinosaur fossils before examining their features and matching them to the correct prehistoric creatures;
- a fun activity booklet featuring a range of puzzles and story-inspired activities, including fossil hunting, dinosaur discoveries, sensory writing and reporting on the mystery;
- a take-home activity, inviting children to imagine that they have discovered a brand-new dinosaur and draw and label its features.
The activities provide opportunities to develop reading comprehension, vocabulary, speaking and listening, writing, observation and reasoning, alongside particularly strong links to Science, including fossils, prehistoric creatures, identifying physical features and considering how evidence can help us learn about the past.
Ideal for KS1 classrooms, school libraries, reading groups and reading-for-pleasure initiatives, this pack combines the appeal of dinosaurs with the excitement of solving a mystery, giving children plenty of reasons to investigate, discuss and return to the book.
