Jekyll vs Hyde: The Potion of Doom Upper KS2 Story Resource Pack

Bring Gothic fiction, mysterious transformations and plenty of monstrous mischief into the classroom with this Upper KS2 resource pack inspired by Jekyll vs Hyde: The Potion of Doom by Jack Meggitt-Phillips, illustrated by Holly Swain and published by Farshore.

Created by Teacher’s Pet in collaboration with Reading Rocks and Picture News as part of the Ready, Set, Read project- designed to encourage reading for pleasure as part of the Go All In / National Literacy Trust initiative.
This collection provides a range of reading, writing and cross-curricular activities designed to help pupils explore the story in depth while developing key Upper KS2 skills.

The resources encourage children to follow Henrik’s inheritance, the creation of his mysterious potion and the emergence of his alter ego, Eddie Hyde, while investigating the secrets surrounding Gabby, Lady Deadlock and Jekyll Manor.
Pupils can explore changing character motivations, gather and connect clues, make inferences and examine themes including identity, friendship, inheritance, choices and responsibility.

The pack includes:

  • a comprehensive UKS2 Curriculum Ideas Map, providing opportunities across English, Maths, Science, Art and Design, D&T, Computing, History and PSHE. Activities range from exploring Gothic atmosphere and investigating materials to mapping Jekyll Manor, programming transformation animations and discovering the Victorian context behind the original Jekyll and Hyde story;
  • a themed activity booklet containing a book review and wordsearch alongside more substantial creative and written activities. Children can design their own Hyde alter ego, write in role as Gabby following the escape from Jekyll Manor, complete an ongoing character study of Henrik and report the dramatic manor fire for The Gothville Gazette;
  • a themed book corner pack, including a class reading display, further-reading recommendations for children who enjoy monsters, transformations and Gothic adventures, general book-club discussion prompts and dedicated Jekyll vs Hyde: The Potion of Doom reading questions;
  • book-specific reading prompts exploring Henrik and Eddie’s contrasting personalities, Henrik and Gabby’s developing friendship, Lady Deadlock’s motives, the importance of the Jekyll inheritance and the dramatic events at Jekyll Manor.
    The questions encourage pupils to retrieve, infer, predict, justify opinions and support their responses with evidence from the text.

There are particularly rich opportunities for Upper KS2 English.
Pupils can investigate how third-person narration, humour, dialogue, sentence length and chapter endings affect the reader, before applying similar techniques to their own writing.

Suggested outcomes include Gothic scenes, newspaper reports, balanced discussions, confidential investigations and non-chronological reports.

The story also provides an engaging springboard for wider curriculum learning.
Children can investigate properties and changes of materials, explore dissolving and separation techniques, use ratio and proportion with fictional potion formulas, investigate late-Victorian Britain, create branching digital stories and discuss how choices, apologies and responsible actions can repair harm.

Perfect for a Year 5 or Year 6 class reader, guided reading focus, book club or whole-class reading project, this resource collection gives teachers plenty of ways to extend engagement with Jekyll vs Hyde: The Potion of Doom while supporting reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing and wider curriculum learning.

A brilliant choice for pupils who enjoy monsters, transformations, dark secrets, Gothic adventures and stories that mix spooky situations with humour.
