Explore where food comes from and how growing changes throughout the year with this Seasonal Food Sorting activity, designed to extend learning around Tree: Seasons Come, Seasons Go, written by Patricia Hegarty and illustrated by Britta Teckentrup.
Children sort photographs of different fruits and vegetables according to the season in which they grow best.
The resource includes radishes, spring greens and rhubarb for spring; strawberries, raspberries and tomatoes for summer; blackberries, pumpkin and beetroot for autumn; and sprouts, apples and pears for winter.
As children sort the food onto the spring, summer, autumn and winter mats, practitioners can encourage conversations about growing, harvesting and seasonal produce.
Children might also talk about foods they recognise, foods they have tasted and fruit or vegetables they have seen growing at home, in a garden or at their Early Years setting.
A useful hands-on activity for developing children’s understanding of the natural world while making meaningful connections between seasons, plants and the food we eat.

Inspired by the popular children’s picture book Tree: Seasons Come, Seasons Go, written by Patricia Hegarty and illustrated by Britta Teckentrup, this Early Years resource provides a hands-on way for children to explore the changing seasons and extend their learning beyond the story.
