Festival Giraffes Tuff Tray | Sharing and Grouping | Week 8 Reception Summer Maths

This engaging festival-themed tuff tray supports children in developing their understanding of grouping, counting and multiplication structures through practical play.
Children select a number card to determine how many giraffes are taking part in the parade, then dress each giraffe with a headband, feather and flower, working out how many items they will need altogether.

As children organise and count the resources, they explore the concept of equal groups, recognising that each giraffe needs the same number of accessories.
The activity encourages children to identify how many groups they have, how many items are in each group and how many items are needed altogether.
Mathematical vocabulary such as group, equal, count, altogether and left over is reinforced through meaningful discussion and problem-solving.

Challenge opportunities encourage children to explain their thinking using stem sentences such as “There are 4 groups of 3” and “There are 12 altogether.”
Through hands-on exploration, children build confidence in grouping, counting and recognising patterns within numbers.
