Storytelling – How to Create a Character Video Guide

In the first video of our Storytelling series, we look at ‘How to Create a Character‘.

The video is split into seven chapters so you can pause the video at any point with your class and begin to complete the activity together.

In the first chapter, they will begin to think about creating their own character using a selection of choices and prompt questions to guide them.

In chapter two children will continue to explore who their character is by thinking about characteristics and by exploring what adjectives they could use to describe their character in their writing.

By chapter three they will be ready to describe the physical appearance and accessories of their character before moving on to naming their character in chapter four.

Chapter 5 then involves getting the children to think about what items their character would carry in a backpack – this is particularly useful as it will help to shape what kind of story the children create as they will need to think why their character is carrying specific items.

Chapter 6 is the opportunity to bring it all together and for the first time begin to see their character in full form, ready to draw or include in their story.

An added bonus chapter gets the children to go through the process again if they want to create side characters to use in their stories.

This video is part of our Storytelling range of resources released during National Storytelling Week 2022. Supporting power points and an activity booklet is available, which can then be used alongside this guided video lesson.
