The Worst Thing That Could Possibly Happen Upper KS2 Story Resource Pack

Step into a world where ordinary things become decidedly unsettling with this free The Worst Thing That Could Possibly Happen Upper KS2 resource pack, created as part of the Ready, Set, Read! reading-for-pleasure campaign.
Written by Guy Bass and illustrated by David Roberts, The Worst Thing That Could Possibly Happen is a brilliantly creepy collection of interconnected horror stories where familiar situations take strange, surprising and sometimes sinister turns.

From missing people and suspicious reflections to strange creatures, disappearing pets and the mysterious World Behind the World, the collection gives Upper KS2 readers plenty to puzzle over.
The stories are told through a mixture of prose, verse, comic strips and picture-book parody, allowing pupils to explore how different forms, illustrations, typography and page design can completely change the pace, tone and impact of a story.

Created for Upper KS2, the accompanying resources encourage pupils to look beyond the scares and investigate how the stories work: spotting clues, making connections between tales, examining how suspense is created and considering what happens when something seemingly ordinary becomes a threat.

The pack includes:

  • UKS2 Curriculum Ideas Map – a wide-ranging collection of teaching opportunities across English, Maths, Science, Computing, PSHE, Spoken Language, Art, Design and D&T.
  • Activities include writing original horror stories, investigating the World Behind the World, exploring reflection, creating branching narratives, examining ethical choices and analysing how David Roberts combines humour with horror through his illustrations.
  • The Worst Thing That Could Possibly Happen Activity Booklet – featuring a book review and themed wordsearch alongside story-specific activities. Pupils can design their own World Behind the World, write Gabriel’s desperate message from behind the mirror, investigate the suspiciously cheerful Gigglytibs and create a new verse inspired by Were-Everywhere!.
  • Book Corner Pack – resources to keep pupils talking about the collection throughout the class read, including a reading display, recommended next reads, general book-club prompts, story-specific discussion questions and vocabulary resources.
  • Ready, Set, Read! supporting content – with additional author and illustrator insight from Reading Rocks and thought-provoking discussion opportunities from Picture News.

The anthology format makes this a particularly rich text for comparison and deeper reading.
Pupils can identify the central threat, turning point and ending of individual tales before comparing how different stories create suspense.
They can investigate direct address, withheld information, irony and cliff-hangers; track recurring ideas such as the Sideways Door and World Behind the World; and consider why some endings resolve a mystery while others deliberately leave the reader wondering.

There are equally strong opportunities for writing.
Children can plan their own short horror story beginning in an ordinary setting where just one detail is wrong, experimenting with sensory description, sentence length, paragraphing and carefully controlled revelation to increase tension.
They can even choose the form that best suits their idea – from traditional prose or verse to a comic or deceptively cheerful picture-book parody.
The text also opens up thoughtful discussion around fear, friendship, loss, isolation, responsibility, control and making safe choices, while cross-curricular activities allow pupils to investigate mirrors and reflection, explore animal adaptations and food chains, create classification keys, design hidden-world doorways and experiment with digital storytelling.

Ideal for a whole-class read, guided reading, book club, horror or suspense unit, creative writing stimulus or reading-for-pleasure project, this free Upper KS2 pack provides plenty of opportunities for children to read closely, think critically and discover just how much fun it can be when a story makes the familiar feel very, very strange.
