Year 5 Place Value Maths Comprehensions
Designed to help your Year 5 children apply and consolidate their understanding of Place Value, this set of Maths Comprehensions provides engaging, real-life contexts in which children can use their mathematical knowledge and reasoning skills.
The comprehensions follow the White Rose Maths small steps for Place Value in the Autumn Term (Block 1) and support the relevant areas of the Mathematics National Curriculum.
Each comprehension places the mathematics within an accessible context, encouraging children to retrieve information from a text before applying their mathematical understanding to a varied set of questions.
The seven comprehensions are based around the Museum of a Million Stories, with children exploring a Roman gallery, cataloguing a new collection, preparing a museum catalogue, working in the archive, tracking the millionth object, comparing gallery visitor numbers and preparing the museum’s annual report.
The Maths Comprehensions are designed to develop children’s understanding of how to:
- Read Roman numerals to 1,000
- Understand and use the Roman numeral symbols D and M
- Read and interpret years written in Roman numerals
- Understand numbers to 10,000
- Understand numbers to 100,000
- Understand numbers to 1,000,000
- Read and write numbers to 1,000,000
- Understand powers of 10
- Find 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000 or 100,000 more or less than a given number
- Partition numbers to 1,000,000
- Use number lines to 1,000,000
- Compare and order numbers to 100,000
- Compare and order numbers to 1,000,000
- Round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 or 1,000
- Round numbers within 100,000
- Round numbers within 1,000,000
Rather than practising mathematical skills in isolation, the comprehensions give children opportunities to read, interpret and use mathematical information in context.
Questions include retrieval, reading and writing Roman numerals, identifying place value, partitioning large numbers, working with powers of 10, using number lines, comparing and ordering numbers, rounding and explaining mathematical reasoning.
This makes the resource ideal for independent work, guided groups, consolidation, revision or as an opportunity to assess how confidently children can apply their learning in unfamiliar contexts.
The PowerPoint also includes answer slides to share with the children as you discuss their responses and the methods they used.
This provides a useful opportunity to address misconceptions as a whole class, compare different approaches and reinforce key mathematical vocabulary and reasoning.
