What is Regulation Road?

Regulation Road is a complete emotional regulation intervention designed to help young children develop the vocabulary, awareness and practical skills needed to understand and respond to their emotions.

Through six structured Pit Stops, children learn to:

//tpet.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/whatis-signs.png
  • Recognise and name different emotions
  • Notice how feelings may affect their bodies
  • Identify things that can change their emotional state
  • Consider what they need in the moment
  • Explore a range of regulation strategies
  • Communicate their needs and ask for help
  • Respond thoughtfully when somebody else needs support
  • Reflect on their own individual regulation journey

The programme does not teach that one emotional zone is better than another. Every emotion is valid and every zone forms part of the journey. Children are encouraged to notice what they are experiencing and decide whether support or a strategy would be helpful.

Parents as Partners

Supporting Consistency Between Home and School
Children benefit from hearing consistent messages about emotions from the important adults around them.

The Regulation Road Parent Pack helps families use the same characters, vocabulary and supportive questions introduced at school. This continuity can help children feel secure, communicate their needs more confidently and practise regulation strategies within everyday family life.

Parents and carers receive practical resources rather than lengthy theory, including conversation prompts, personalised toolbox activities, family challenges and quick-reference guidance.

The Parent Quick Guide explicitly reinforces that all emotions have a purpose, behaviour communicates need, co-regulation comes before self-regulation and consistent language between home and school helps children feel supported.

Unlike many zones of regulation programs, Regulation Road teaches children that Every Zone Is Part of the Journey.
Regulation Road teaches children that emotions are not good or bad. Feeling angry, worried, sad, frustrated, excited or calm can all be understandable responses to what is happening.

The aim is not to make every child reach or remain in the Green Zone. Instead, children learn to ask:

How is my engine feeling?
What is my body telling me?
What might have changed my engine?
What do I need right now?
Would a strategy or some support help me?

Instead of teaching children to move towards one 'good' zone, Regulation Road helps them understand that every emotion has a purpose. Children learn to recognise how they feel, understand what their body is telling them, identify what they need and choose supportive strategies that work for them.

This helps children develop emotional awareness without feeling that uncomfortable emotions must immediately be changed or “fixed”.

Regulation Road is much more than a collection of printable worksheets. It is a complete emotional regulation programme that provides everything teachers, teaching assistants, ELSAs and nurture practitioners need to deliver a structured intervention with confidence.

The programme has been carefully designed to minimise planning time while providing children with engaging, practical opportunities to recognise emotions, understand body clues, explore emotional triggers and discover regulation strategies that work for them.

Yes. Regulation Road includes a dedicated Parent Pack featuring conversation cards, home activities, strategy guides, family challenges and other resources that help create consistency between home and school.

Build a strong partnership between home and school with practical emotional regulation resources that help families use the same language, strategies and supportive approaches.

The Regulation Road Parent Pack has been carefully designed to extend children's emotional regulation learning beyond the classroom. Created to accompany the six-session Regulation Road intervention, this comprehensive collection of home resources helps parents and carers understand the programme, reinforce key concepts and continue important conversations about feelings in everyday family life.

When children hear consistent language and experience the same supportive approaches at both school and home, they are more likely to develop confidence in recognising emotions, talking about their feelings and exploring strategies that work for them.

Rather than overwhelming families with theory, this practical toolkit provides engaging activities, conversation prompts and visual resources that encourage emotional regulation to become part of everyday routines.

Using the familiar Regulation Road characters and racing theme, families can explore emotions together, build personalised regulation strategies and celebrate the small steps children make as they continue their emotional regulation journey.
