Roman Baths Information Text and Activity

This information text helps you to build an understanding with the children about Roman bath houses - with a particular focus on the hypocaust (the underfloor heating system they famously used).

Children can see real, historical photos of a hypocaust which was found within the city of Chester and analyse the floor plan of a real bath house that used to be located in Chester.

Deva Victrix Fortress Map Labelling Activity

This resource shows children what the Roman fortress of Deva Victrix (now Chester) would have looked like.

Children can learn a little bit about the fortress before analysing its layout using the map which has been recreated using historical references.

The map includes a little activity that requires children to think about how map keys work by creating their own colour-coded map key for the map.

Roman Hypocaust Photo Analysis

This resource includes a photo of a Roman hypocaust that can be found within the Chester Roman Gardens.

Children can look at the image and use their analytical skills to take a guess at what they think it was used for. After completing a short write-up about their guess, they can go off and research what a Roman hypocaust was.

Using books or the internet, there is space on the activity for them to record their findings and then compare them to what they originally thought it was.
