The Books To Read With Your Class This Christmas

December 1st 2021| Phil Stronge

To many teachers, Christmas may still feel a long way away. However, December is upon us and things are getting decidedly more festive. To help you out in your classroom in the run up to Christmas, my present to you is a review of three fantastic Christmas picture books that you need to share with your children.

Father Christmas by Raymond Briggs, sometimes gets forgotten due to the even more successful book by the same author, The Snowman, but it’s a magical story in its own right. Wonderfully illustrated in an almost comic book style, the reader meets a very human Father Christmas and learns about everything he gets up to on his busiest day of the year. It’s a lovely story full of heart and humour. Suitable for children of all ages.

Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg is another incredibly beautiful book that is sometimes overshadowed by the equally wonderful film adaptation. It tells the tale of a young boy awakened by a steam train that appears outside of his house on Christmas Eve. What follows is a spellbinding journey culminating in a visit to the North Pole. A truly magical story that will captivate your class no matter what age they are.

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey by Susan Wojciechowski is the final entry and probably the lesser known of the three books reviewed. If I had to pick, this book would have to be my favourite Christmas book of all time. With stunning illustrations and an incredibly moving story, it tells the tale of a cantankerous woodcarver who is tasked with carving a nativity scene for a young boy and his widowed mother. As the story progresses, the rich characters develop and the book keeps you gripped right up to the ending on Christmas day. A highly recommended text to use across KS2. Grab yourself a copy and explore the endless learning opportunities that this book provides.

Other Favourites…

A Rubbish Penguin Story

I hope that this blog has inspired you to share a Christmas book this December. Before you go, please let me show you one more brilliant new book. A Rubbish Penguin Story is the latest book written by Teacher’s Pet. It tells the heart-warming story of a penguin who does his little bit to make a difference to our planet. It’s a rhyming story so fun to read and listen to and will keep your children captivated with its beautiful illustrations. The book is available to view for free online as part of our Advent scheme.
