Anti-Bullying Week

What is Anti-Bullying Week

Anti-Bullying Week 2020 takes place, this year, from November 16th to the 20th. This nationwide event is organised by the Anti-Bullying Alliance and is intended to raise awareness of the issue of bullying among children, especially in schools. Children of all ages as well as parents and children are encouraged to get involved in the event and take part in activities that will help to shine a light on the problem of bullying and ways to help resolve the issue.

Anti-Bullying Week 2020

The theme for Anti-Bullying Week 2020 is: United Against Bullying. ABA themselves have worked with over 300 young people and over 100 members of school staff to develop this years theme.

This year, more than ever, we’ve witnessed the positive power that society can have when we come together to tackle a common challenge.  Anti-Bullying Week is no different. Bullying has a long lasting effect on those who experience and witness it. But by channelling our collective power, through shared efforts and shared ambitions, we can reduce bullying together. From parents and carers, to teachers and politicians, to children and young people, we all have a part to play in coming together to make a difference.  We’re all a piece in the puzzle, and together, we’re united against bullying.

Odd Socks Day

Designed to be a fun day for everyone who takes part, Odd Socks Day is designed as a day for people to express themselves and celebrate their own individuality as to what makes them unique.

Rather than other fundraising days whereby some kids may feel left out as they can’t afford to spend money on a costume to show off or the latest fashion; all that’s required is simply to where a pair of odd socks 🙂

The idea of the day is that it’s very inclusive as literally anyone in the world can partake.

Anti-Bullying Week is coordinated by the ABA, however, its reach would not be as strong without all of the social media interaction that is done by individuals and other organisations. Sharing a post on social media, make sure that use the #antibullyingweek. And if you are making use of our resources-such as our Buddy Bots- please make sure to tag us using @TeachersPetUK.

As social media and other forms of digital communication become used by young people more and more, the worry for parents and parental figures also increases tenfold. We are hearing constantly about how social media giants are forgoing their responsibilities as more and more young and vulnerable people are being exploited or abused online.

SafeToNet is a British based cyber-safety company that is working in supporting ABA-and is also working directly with Samsung- to improve the digital safeguards that are in place for young people. Their system makes use of AI and behaviour analytics to detect threats such as cyberbullying, abuse and aggression.

For further information on SafeToNet I really recommend having a look at their site which can be found right here.

Top Tips From ABA

Below I have included a short excerpt from Anti-Bullying Alliance’ page on “Top Tips For Teachers“.

  • Bullying is not just something that children and teenagers go through. It is well researched that bullying causes long term damage to both the person on the receiving end, and those who bully.
  • Children need to be supported to speak out if they or someone they know is being bullied. Make it clear how pupils can report bullying. If a child tells you they are being bullied – take what they say seriously and ask them what they want to happen.
  • Make sure your Anti-Bullying Policy is up to date, freely accessible and regularly promoted – and that it makes clear how you will respond to bullying as a school community
  • Take time to talk to pupils about what it feels like to be in your school, whether there are any bullying hot spots – and if there is anything you could do differently to stop bullying

Buddy Bots- Cyber Bullying

Following the events that Corona Virus has produced, we created an all new line of Buddy Bots resources, including an E-Book.

We realised that with the sudden change in the world, cyber bullying would stand to be even more prevalent than it has ever been due to the restrictions on physical interactions. So we decided to design a whole catalogue of Buddy Bot resources all to do with how to stay safe online and how to deal with online bullying.
