In Year 4, children explore how sounds form through vibrations. They identify vibrations in different objects and watch how these vibrations travel through materials to reach the ear. Pupils investigate how the pitch of a sound links to the features of the object that produces it. They also test how stronger vibrations create louder sounds. Children notice that sounds become quieter as they move further from the source. They build understanding through simple investigations and clear comparisons.
These activities support and follow the Year 4 National Curriculum for science, encouraging children to build essential enquiry skills such as observing vibrations, comparing pitch and volume, identifying patterns and investigating changes based on the topic focus.
