Year 5 properties of materials helps children explore the features of different materials. They compare hardness and test how easily each material dissolves. They also look at how clear a material is and how well it carries heat or electricity. Pupils test mixtures and learn to separate them by filtering, sieving or evaporating. They explore dissolving to see how a solution forms. Children learn which changes they can reverse, like melting. They also learn which changes they cannot reverse, such as burning or simple reactions that create new materials. This work builds a strong understanding of Year 5 properties of materials in real situations.
These activities support and follow the Year 5 National Curriculum for science, encouraging children to build essential enquiry skills such as testing, comparing results, drawing evidence-based conclusions and explaining changes based on the topic focus.
