In Year 6, children learn how scientists group living things. They explore broad groups such as microorganisms, plants and animals. Pupils look at the features scientists use to sort and name living things. They also compare similarities and differences to understand why an organism fits a group. Children use research, observation and simple comparisons to see how classification systems help make sense of the natural world.
These activities support and follow the Year 6 National Curriculum for science, encouraging children to build essential enquiry skills such as researching, comparing characteristics, classifying and explaining scientific reasoning based on the topic focus.
